Urszula Tekieli’s painting “Aer” combines symbols from both European and Japanese cultures. The Latin word aer has multiple meanings – it can signify melody, breath, or air. In addition to the attribute of the flute held by the woman, the title is also referenced in the kimono’s motif of clouds and cranes against a blue sky. Along the hem of the kimono, pine trees symbolize strength, standing firm against the strongest gusts of wind. The greyhound, compositionally connected to the woman, wears a collar echoing the kimono’s patterns and has a coat with rhythmic stripes, further reinforcing the painting’s central theme.
Urszula Tekieli’s painting “Aer” fits perfectly in modern, Japandi, or Art Deco interiors, bringing harmony and lightness. Its subtle color palette and nature-inspired symbolism make it ideal for a living room, study, or meditation space. It is a unique choice for those seeking art that blends East and West, adding elegance and an artistic character to any interior.
Artist:
Urszula Tekieli is an artist who masterfully blends two aesthetics – the elegance of European Art Deco and the spirituality of traditional Japan. She lives and works in Tenczynek near Krakow, and her paintings are inspired by Noh theatre, ukiyo-e woodblock prints, and the Rinpa school tradition. Her works often feature solitary female figures – static, serene, frequently accompanied by a greyhound. The compositions are minimalist, with geometric backgrounds and decorative details, yet always maintain a calm, balanced rhythm. The artist avoids literalness, leaving space for the viewer to interpret the mood, relationships, and symbols personally.
